Water is essential in maintaining different bodily functions. But did you know that 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated? This whopping figure is not entirely surprising given that the average American drinks just 2.5 cups of water per day. During the summer — when the sun’s heat is at its peak — having personalized water bottles can come in handy.

To avoid getting dehydrated, here are eight essential tips you need to know.

Know how much water you need. This varies from person to person. As a general of thumb, experts drinking half of your body weight in ounces of water. If you’re chronically dehydrated, it’s helpful to invest in a water intake tracker so you can adequately monitor who much water you’ve already consumed.

Carry a water bottle. Personalized water bottles are the trend nowadays — and it’s a bandwagon you need to jump on. It’s better to have a big bottle by your side because it allows you to drink adequate water without getting too many refills. Do not treat coffee as a thirst replenisher. As much as they taste great, that iced coffee from your favorite cafe is not the same as water. Coffee is considered a diuretic, making your bladder jumpy, causing you to urinate more frequently than usual. If you’re thirsty, the simplest — and cheapest — way to quench it is by drinking water.

Eat oatmeal for your breakfast. Oatmeals are a breakfast staple for a good reason: It’s packed with nutrients. But apart from that, did you know that it also contains plenty of fluids? If you add water-rich fruits such as strawberries, you can get even more water just from one oatmeal.

Drink herbal tea in the evenings. Teas are healthier alternatives to coffee. Drinking them after a long day of work or of doing household chores is also meditative and rejuvenating. If you make it a habit to drink herbal tea at nighttime, you’re already adding an extra cup of fluid to your daily requirement.

Keep an eye on how frequently you urinate. If you’re urinating every hour or two — and the color of your urine is light yellow — it’s an indication that you’re drinking fluid sufficiently. On the other hand, beware if you’re urine has a dark color or if you’re peeing less frequently.
